Walter R. Kirkwood, 90

skm_c3350161205164700_0001Walter R. Kirkwood, 90, formerly of Wampum passed away Friday, December 2, 2016 at Rhodes Estates in New Castle following an extended illness.

Born December 22, 1925 in Wampum, he was the son of the late James Dorse and Helen Ruth Nagel Kirkwood. He was married for 73 years to Jean Grinnen Kirkwood who survives.

Walter retired after 41 years at Medusa Cement Company where he was a Foreman and Quarry Supervisor. He was a member of the Wampum United Methodist Church. Walter was a Veteran of the Navy where he participated in the D. Day invasion in Normandy. He was a member of the Wampum American Legion Post 749.

In addition to his wife, Jean, survivors include daughter, Bette Jean (Dave) Capots of West PIttsburg; two sons, Walter Jack Kirkwood of New Castle, Gary Lee (Jana) Kirkwood of Wampum; son in law, Elmer McClain; nine grandchildren; and nineteen great grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Sandra McClain, and siblings, James and Bob Kirkwood, Corabelle “Tippy” LaPenta, Delores Talley and Bill and Donna Lou Kirkwood in infancy.

Per Walter’s wishes, there will be no services.

  1. Dear Jean, Bette, Jack and Cindy, Ink and Elmer, I am so sorry to hear of Walter’s passing. Growing up next to you guys was wonderful! Your dad always had something to tease us about and make us laugh. Your dad and all of you made our neighborhood and my childhood special. God Bless!
