Balind “Bert” Birtalan, 98, of Chewton Wurtemburg Rd., Wampum passed away Thursday, February 27, 2020 at Quality Life Services in New Castle following a short illness.
Born February 20, 1922 in Ellwood City, he was the son of the late Balind and Mary (Toth) Birtalan. He was married to Victoria Valentino Birtalan for 70 years when she passed away September 9, 2016. .
Bert retired from the Ellwood City Forge where he was a press operator. He was a member of the former St. Monica Catholic Church in Wampum and current member of Holy Redeemer Church in Ellwood City. He served two terms during WWII, one in the Army (1939-1941) and one in the Navy (1941-1945). Bert was a member of the SOI and Moose Clubs in Ellwood City.
Survivors include four sons, James (Kathy) Birtalan of New Castle, Robert Birtalan of Wampum, Ron Birtalan of Mt. Jackson, John (Amy) Birtalan of East Palestine, Ohio; five grandchildren,and five great grandchildren.
The last of his family, Bert was preceded in death by a brother, Ben Birtalan, and sister, Julie Lukas.
A private Blessing Service will be held on Monday, March 2 at 11 am at the Marshall Funeral Home, Wampum. Interment will follow in Holy Redeemer Cemetery.

Very Sorry for your loss. Bert was such a great guy! When John lived out in Ellport the neighborhood always knew we would see Bert drive thru at least twice a day, always stopping to say hello & give some words of wisdom to all the neighbor kids. Even after John moved we would still see Bert drive thru, guess he was just checking up on us all. Rest in Peace!!
