Betty J. Rice, 87, of Old Zelienople Rd., Ellwood City (Franklin Twp.) passed away Monday, October 15, 2018 at UPMC – St. Margaret Hospital in Pittsburgh following a brief illness.

Born July 18, 1931 in Jackson Twp. PA, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Alma Agnew Herr. She was married to Mervin D. Rice for 68 years when he passed away December 17, 2012.

Betty graduated from Lincoln High School in 1949 and worked at the former GC Murphy’s in Ellwood City. She was an active member of Bell Memorial Presbyterian Church where she was formerly the youth group leader for 15 years and participated with the Monday Prayer Group. Betty also helped with the annual rummage sale. She enjoyed visiting shut ins and always remembered them with numerous cards. Her most cherished time was spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include two children, Dennis Rice and Kathy Newton, both of Ellwood City; one brother, Harold (Darla) Herr of Zelienople; two sister in-laws, Thelma Stenger of New Brighton, Irene Rice of Ontario, Canada; three grandchildren, Jeremy (Rachel) Newton, Carrie Young, and Michael (Brienne) Newton; 12 great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Young.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday October 18 from 4-7 pm at the Marshall Funeral Home 200 Fountain Ave. Ellwood City. Friends will also be received at the funeral home on Friday from 10 am until the funeral service at 11 am. Her pastor, Rev. Ray Medina will officiate.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Bell Memorial Presbyterian Church.
