Donald L. Kingston, Sr. passed away on October 6th, 2024, at the age of 79 from complications associated with AL Amyloidosis, contracted as a result of his exposure to Agent Orange toxins while serving in Vietnam. He was born in Ellwood City, PA on January 22nd, 1945, to Giles and Gertrude (née Stubbel) Kingston.
Don was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather and is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marianne (née Williams), brothers Dennis and David, sister Patricia, and his three sons and their immediate families, including Don and wife Beth of Arnold, MD; Kevin and wife Lara of Duxbury, MA and their children Mackenzie, Alexandra, Kevin, WIlliam, Aidan, and Katherine; Paul and wife Liz of Gettysburg, PA and their children Ryan and Lily. Don was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Greg.
After graduating from Lincoln High School, Don joined the US Air Force where he served in Germany and Vietnam. Upon completing his service, Don moved to Washington, D.C. where he joined the Metropolitan Police Department and met the love of his life, Marianne. While working in D.C., Don attended American University and graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Administration of Justice. After 20 years with the Police Department, Don and the family moved to Gettysburg, PA where he worked for Gettysburg College and Battlefield Harley Davidson.
In addition to never missing the boys’ various activities, practices and games, Don was very active in his community. He volunteered for multiple community and youth sports associations such as the Atholton Youth Recreation Association. St Francis Xavier School Board, Habitat for Humanity and the Cumberland Township Sewer Board. Additionally, he was a proud member of Gettysburg American Legion Post 202, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7234 in Ocean View (Bethany Beach) Delaware, AMVETS Post 172 of Fairfield, Moose Lodge 720, McSherrystown, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1562, Gettysburg and Hanover Elks Lodge 763. Don was a 57 year member of the American Legion.
A viewing will be held from 5-7pm on October 10th, at the Monahan Funeral Home, Gettysburg, PA. There will be full military honors presented by the Adams County Allied Veterans following the viewing. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Ellwood City, on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at Noon with a visitation before the service at the church from 11:00 AM until the time of the Mass. Father Joseph Freedy will officiate. Following the service, final rites will be conducted at Holy Redeemer Cemetery with interment to follow.
