Dorothy J. Scala, 87, of Koppel, formerly of Wampum passed away Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the Beaver Valley Nursing and Rehab Center following a brief illness.

Born December 19, 1927 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late James H. and Jane Buchanan Johnston.

Dorothy graduated from Wampum High School in 1945. She then went to work in the Bell Telephone business office. Dorothy later worked in the offices at the former Medusa Cement Company and the Russell Trucking Company. She retired in 1991 from the Lawrence County Home. During the Persian Golf Conflict, Dorothy worked for Mine Safety at the Wampum Mine facility. Following her retirement, she worked at several area stores as a product demonstrator. Dorothy served as the Wampum Boro Auditor for several years. Dorothy was a Red Cross volunteer in Beaver County at the canteen. She was a member of the Women of the Moose and a former member of the Wampum AARP. Dorothy was an avid Bingo Player.

Survivors include a son, Ed (Denise) Scala of New Castle; step-sister, Bonnie (Ted) Dreblow of Golden, Colorado; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and Katharine Tebay Diefenderfer, with whom she made her home and was like a mother to her.

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, April 22 from 4 pm until the time of the Memorial service at 7 pm at the Marshall Funeral Home 341 Main Street Wampum. Pastor Tom O’Brien of the First Christian Church will officiate.
