A prominent Ellwood City Dentist, Dr. Charles W. Marion, passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2020 at home. He had practiced dentistry for 52 years.
Born February 10, 1932, Dr. Marion graduated from Lincoln High School in 1950. While attending high school, he worked in the dental office of his Uncle, Dr. C.R. Carnahan, after school and on weekends. This was an inspiration for him to become a Dentist. He then attended Geneva College for 2 years and then transferred to the University of Pittsburgh for 1 year. After that year, he was drafted into the Army. With his prior dental experience, he was assigned a position in the Dental Department. There he obtained more experience regarding managing a dental office. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1955.
Dr. Marion met his wife of 62 years, the former June Rue, in Denver. They were married December 23, 1958. They moved to Ellwood City for him to complete his education. He completed his Pre-dental requirements at Geneva College. In 1965, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. In his 4th year of Dental School, Dr. Marion received the award from the faculty as the student who showed the greatest interest, knowledge and proficiency in General Clinical Dentistry. After graduation, he opened an office in Ellwood, and also taught 2 days per week at the clinic of the University of Pittsburgh Dental School.
In January 2010, he traveled with the Baptist Medical & Dental Missionary International to an isolated mountain village in Honduras. The Mission team members paid their own expenses as the dentistry was free to the Hondurans. Dr. Marion found the experience rewarding.
Dr. Marion enjoyed traveling, and hunting, but the thing he enjoyed even more was his dental work. That of greatest importance to him was his family. He especially enjoyed attending events and activities of his sons and grandchildren.
Dr. Marion was proceeded in death by his Father, Charles W. Marion, Sr. in August 1985 and his Mother, Emma Bookamer Marion, in November 2014. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, June Rue Marion; sons: Dr. Mark A. Marion of Zelienople and wife Kimberly; Dr. Martin C. Marion of Fombell; Grandchildren, Mason Marion and fiancé Tara Hermon, Dr. Morgan Marion Zwickel and husband, Joseph Zwickel; Sister Ila Lee Mayberry and husband Bill of Florida: many nieces and nephews.
Dr. Marion leaves a legacy of dentistry which is carried on by his sons, Dr. Mark A. Marion of Zelienople and Dr. Martin C. Marion of Ellwood, his granddaughter, Dr. Morgan Marion Zwickel, a dentist currently in an orthodontic residency.
He will be missed by his family, many friends and patients.
Due to COVID, a small private viewing will be held for the family at Marshall Funeral Home in Ellwood City. In gratitude for the great nursing care that he received, in lieu of flowers, donations if desired can be given to Vitas Healthcare, 2009 MacKenzie Way, Suite 110, Cranberry Twp., PA 16066 in memory of Dr. Charles Marion.
