Dr. Donald Alvin Magee passed away peacefully at his home on Beechwood Boulevard in Ellwood City, PA on May 3, 2017.
He was pre-deceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Vivienne Bauder Magee and his sisters Dr. Margaret Craig and Dorothy Philson.
Dr. Magee was born on February 12, 1925 in Ellwood City to Dr. Thomas and Mrs. Edna Mae Magee.
He attended Geneva College before graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science Degree. At Pitt, he was the President of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Michigan in 1948 where he was the President of Delta Sigma Delta his Dental Fraternity. He also graduated from the Dewey School of Orthodontics in New York City.
Dr. Magee served as a Lieutenant in the Dental Corps of U.S. Army in Valley Forge, PA caring for soldiers during the Korean War. He loved his country and was proud of his service.
He returned to Ellwood City and began practicing dentistry with his father. After his father’s passing, he continued his solo practice until his reluctant retirement in 2003. He treated thousands of grateful patients over more than 55 years of his practice.
Dr. Magee loved Ellwood City and was extremely community-minded. His activities included the Boy Scouts of America, Canoe Trails, the Rotary Club, the Masons, the Ellwood City Historical Society, and the Health Board. He served on the Boards of the First Seneca Bank and of the Ellwood City Savings and Loan. He was a lifelong member of Christ United Presbyterian Church where he served as both a Deacon and an Elder.
Don Magee’s passion for American railroads as a child, eventually lead him to purchasing the “Ohio River 364” executive pullman car. With two partners they refurbished it and for 20 years they enjoyed riding the rails on it all over the country.
He was a consummate gentleman and rarely seen around town without a jacket, tie, stylish hat, a ready smile, and a friendly word.
More than anything else, Dr. Magee loved his family. He was married to the former Vivienne Bauder in 1953 and with whom he had four children all of whom survive him. They include Donald A. Magee (Jennifer) of Greenville, MS, Erin Castner ( Allen) of Mendham, NJ, Vivienne Reber of Grand Rapids, MI and Megan Magee ( Renae Brinza) of Pittsburgh. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, all of whom adored Granddaddy.
He was blessed to have Patty Hahn, his wonderful compassionate caretaker for many years and his devoted companion “Molly” the cat for 13 years.
His funeral arrangements will be handled by the Marshall Funeral Home with calling hours on Friday, May 12th, 2017 from 3 to 7 pm. A service to commemorate his life will be held on Saturday at Christ Presbyterian Church, 325 Spring Avenue, Ellwood City at 11:00 a.m. Military services will be conducted by the Veterans Honor Guard. A private interment will follow in the Locust Grove Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Christ United Presbyterian Church of Ellwood City or to The Ellwood City Historical Society.
