Ellwood “Woody” Hazen

Ellwood L. “Woody”  Hazen, 72, of  Woodside Ave., Ellwood City passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at the Beaver Valley Medical Center.   He fought a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Woody was born August 7, 1939 in Franklin Twp. Beaver County, PA to the late Gene and Thelma Frishkorn Hazen.  His stepmother, Barbara Hazen also preceded him in death.

Woody attended Lincoln High School until 10th grade and moved to Wampum High School, where he graduated in 1958.

Woody was employed at Halstead Mitchell in Zelienople and B & W in Beaver Falls for 15 years.  During this time, he proudly joined the US Army Reserves for 6 years.  He worked in sales for several years before joining the McElwain Chevy Olds Motors in Ellwood City as an Automobile Salesman for 20 years until retiring.  After retirement, he fulfilled his life-time dream of owning his own woodshop.  He became the proud owner of his own business, “Woody’s Wood”.  He was an expert wood craftsman and was well-known for his beautiful scrolling creations.  His famous saying was, “Your gift ideas are my challenge”.

Woody was an avid hunter and fisherman.  He loved the outdoors and always took the time to admire the beauty of nature.  He was proud to be an active member and held the position of an officer for several years for the Big Beaver County Sportsman Club in Koppel.  Woody was also a proud member of the Holy Redeemer Parish.

He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Ferrante Hazen, whom he married in 1963 at St. Monica’s Church in Wampum.  Also surviving is one son,  Douglas A. Hazen of Wampum; one granddaughter, Samantha Anne Hazen Lavoie; one step granddaughter, Letisha Welch; one step grandson, Tyler Gibbons; two step great grandsons, Austin and Logan; one aunt, Dorothy Bozett of Georgia; two sisters, Amber (Anthony) Million of Wampum, Cindy Rhodanz of Hermitage; three step-sisters, Barbara (John) Fernandez, Alice (Ronald) Young, Wilma Cox, two step-brothers, Willy (Betty) Kovacs, James (Doris) Kovacs; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step brother, Clyde Kovacs.

Visiting hours will be held on  Sunday August 5, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Marshall Funeral Home 200 Fountain Ave. Ellwood City.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Redeemer Church on August 6, 2012 at 11:00 am.

Interment will follow in the Holy Redeemer Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Redeemer Angel Fund or the Big Beaver County Sportsman Club in Koppel..
