Eugene Bessell

Eugene Bessell, 84, of Wampum passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at his home on Tuesday, November 15, 2016.

Born August 6, 1932 in Wampum, he was the son of the late Harrison and Della May Martin Bessell. He was married for 64 years to Bonnie L. Mohr Bessell. She survives.

Eugene retired in 1994 from Penn Power following 37 years of dedicated service. He was a Veteran of the Army serving during the Korean War from 1953-1955. He was a former member of the American Legion Post 749 in Wampum. Eugene graduated with the 1950 Class of Shenango High School and then furthered his education at the New Castle Business College. Eugene was a member of the Clinton United Methodist Church. He served as a Wampum Councilman for 8 years, was a former member of the Wampum Recreation Board, and also was a former member of the Wampum Volunteer Fire Department. He had also formerly been a Boy Scout Cub Master and coached baseball and basketball for many years.

In addition to his wife, Bonnie, survivors include two sons, Russel E. Bessell of Richmond, VA, Douglas E. (Mary E.) Bessell of New Beaver Boro; daughter, Candace R. (Larry) Youngblood of New Beaver Boro; two sisters, Nellie Strickler and Joanne Aiken, both of Shenango Twp.; nine grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Dora Jane Craven.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday November 17 from 3 pm until the time of the funeral service at 6 pm at the Marshall Funeral Home 341 Main Street Wampum. Rev. Dr. William R. McGary of the Wampum Presbyterian Church will officiate the service. Private interment will follow in the Clinton Cemetery.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Clinton United Methodist Church or the Wampum Presbyterian Church.
