Eugene Martin Zajac

Eugene Martin Zajac, 84, of Davidson St., Wampum died Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at the Ellwood City Hospital. Although in ill health, death was unexpected.

Born November 8, 1929 in Gallitzin, Cambria County, he was the son of the late Joseph and Bertha Olszewska Zajac. He was married for 50 years to Joanne Lawn Zajac who survives. They celebrated their anniversary on August 1st.

Eugene first worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Altoona as a brakeman and car repairman. He then worked and retired in 1987 following 30 years of service from Babcock and Wilcox. He had worked in the cold draw department in the Wallace Run, Ambridge and Koppel Works. He graduated from the Zeth School of Commerce in Altoona. He was a member of St. Monica’s Parish, Queen of Heaven, and currently Holy Redeemer Church in Ellwood City. Eugene was a Veteran of the Army, stationed in Alaska during the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW in New Galilee and was a member of the PRCU Society. Eugene loved his family, his Catholic faith, his Polish heritage, dancing and listening to polka music.

In addition to his wife, Joanne, survivors include a daughter, Lisa (Paul A.) Lehnerd of Boardman, Ohio; son, Darrin E. (Mary Beth Rodgers) Zajac of Wampum, PA; sister, Florence Falbo of Altoona; brother, Martin (Irene) Zajac of Wampum; and a granddaughter, Caitlin J. Lehnerd.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Edward, Theodore, Michael, Constantine Zajac; and four sisters, Mary and Frances Zajac, Stella Sral, and Genevieve “Jean” Pigza.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday November 6 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Marshall Funeral Home 341 Main Street Wampum. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 10 am at Holy Redeemer Church. Military rites will be offered by the Veterans Honor Guard. Interment will follow in Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
