Harold E. McWhertor, 90, of Shenango on the Green in New Wilmington died Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at his residence.
Born June 3, 1924 in Sharon, he was the son of the late Thomas and Margaret Bowen McWhertor. He was married for 64 years to Jean Clark McWhertor who passed away June 25, 2014.
Harold retired in 1990 following 40 years of service at the Aetna Standard in Ellwood City where he was the chief engineer. Following his high school graduation, Harold attended Westminster College until he was called to active duty with the US Navy in 1943. Upon his honorable discharge from the service, he finished school and received his Bachelor’s Degree from Westminster College. Harold then received his Master’s Degree in Engineering from Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland. He was a member of First United Methodist Church where he served as a Trustee and the Church Treasurer. Harold was a 63 year member and Past Master of the Masonic Lodge #599 in Ellwood City where he held the office of treasurer for 25 years. Very active with the Masons, he held various leadership roles at the Scottish Rite, the York Rite, and the Syria Shrine. He was also active with the Boy Scouts, having served on the Moraine Trail Council for 47 years. He had been awarded the Silver Beaver Award and the Distinguished Service Award. He was also a member of the Ellwood City Rotary Club. Harold was a Volunteer Income Tax Preparer for 21 years with the local VITA Program. His hobbies included stamp collecting, coin collecting, and home maintenance.
Survivors include three sons, Thomas E. (Janice) McWhertor of Grand Rapids, MI, Daniel C. (Mary) McWhertor of Plantation, FL, Martin H. (Nanette) McWhertor of Costa Mesa, CA; daughter, Jill E. McWhertor of Costa Mesa, CA; nine grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
In addition to this parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Emmett McWhertor.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, November 30 from 1:30 pm until the time of the Funeral Service at 3:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Ellwood City. His pastor, Rev. Pat Cleary will officiate. A Masonic Service will be held at 1:20 pm on Sunday at the Church. Private family interment will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery in Sharon.
