Leon E. Shoup, 97, of Jefferson Avenue , Ellwood City passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at the Butler Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.

Born October 30, 1917 in Monroe, PA, he was the son of the late Earl J. and Ruth Mong Shoup. He was married for 72 years to Erma M Cotherman Shoup who passed away November 30, 2012.

Leon worked for 35 years at US Steel in Ellwood City until its closure in 1975. He then worked as a Security Guard for 6 years at the Ellwood City Hospital retiring in 1981. He also owned and operated Shoup Insurance Agency for 10 years. Following his retirement, Leon moved to Florida and worked at the Kennedy Space Center. He was the Chief Security Officer for the Columbia Space Shuttle. Leon was an active member of Calvin Presbyterian Church, serving as an Elder, Deacon and Trustee. He was also a 50 year member of the Ellwood City Masonic Lodge # 599 and a member of the Valley of New Castle Scottish Rite. During, WWII, Leon served in the New Castle National Guard. In the 1970’s, he served as a PA State Constable. In 1984, Mr. Shoup was commissioned by the State of Kentucky as a Kentucky Colonial. In his spare time, Leon was an avid hunter, fisherman, and tomato grower. He also enjoyed spending time with the noon coffee crew at McDonald’s. His most cherished time was spent with his family with whom he dearly loved.

Survivors include a son, Karl Shoup of West Pittsburg; daughter, Carol (Frank) Sbarra of Ellwood City; three grandchildren, Jody Lynn (Kelley) Bartley, Karl Shoup Jr, and Melissa (Chris) Clark; and five great grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday April 15 from 5-9 pm at the Marshall Funeral Home 200 Fountain Ave. Ellwood City. A Masonic Service will be held at 7 pm. Friends will also be received at the funeral home Thursday from 10 am until the time of the funeral service at 11 am. His pastor, Rev. Sean Brubaker will officiate.

Interment will follow in the Monroe Cemetery in Knox PA.
