Rosemary Anne Prah

Rosemary Anne Prah, 86, of Grandview Rd, Ellwood City passed away Sunday, April 15, 2018 at her residence.

She was born May 21, 1931 in Johannesburg, South Africa. She was the daughter of the late Albert and Evelyn Crewe.

Rosemary graduated from University of Witwatersrand in 1952. In 1956, Rosemary wrote a novella: Lena, A Life, about black women in the townships of South Africa. These writings were proscribed by the then South African government and Rosemary endured harassment and intimidation from government officials. In 1958, she left for the U.K. after demonstrations and warnings from security officials about her well-being. In 1959, Rosemary and her family traveled to the United States and settled near Butler, PA. In 1969, Rosemary and her husband accepted a position to run a cattle ranch in Bolivia, South America where they also continued to raise there four children. In 1979, motivated largely by the educational needs of her children, Rosemary’s family returned to Pennsylvania. In 1982, Rosemary graduated with an Associates Degree in Nursing from the Community College of Beaver County. In 1997, Rosemary was a semi-finalist in the Dana Awards for Literary Excellence.  

An Authors’ note excerpt from one of her literary works reads, “I do not know where the journey will end; it is a voyage into uncharted waters. Places to meet one’s angels and demons. A celebration when the words sing, and they are truthful and right.”

 Rosemary was a brilliant, beautiful, feisty woman who loved nature and every animal, especially her cherished horses and dogs. She was a talented painter and expert gardener. Her love for her children and grandchildren was unwavering. She shall be missed by her family every day.

Survivors include two daughters, Kimberley (David) Smith of Ellwood City, and Evelyn (Steve) Corley of Texas; two sons, John Prah of Ellwood City, and David Mark (Winnie) Prah of North Carolina; grandson, Alex Prah of Ellwood City, and granddaughter Tanya Manuel of Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Brenda Hull.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers Memorial Contributions can be made to the Humane Society.
