Sarah Tucker Simms

Sarah Tucker  Simms, 102, formerly of Ellwood City died on  Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the Passavant Care Center in Zelienople.

Born January 2, 1911 in Wilkes-Barre, and raised in Canonsburg,  she was the daughter of the late Hiram D. and Frances Wilson Tucker.  She was married on the grounds of Morganza on June 12, 1937 to Thomas W. Simms who passed away  January 24, 1997.

She graduated from the California University of Pennsylvania with a degree in teaching.  After a long and distinguished career as a school teacher, Mrs. Simms retired from the Etna School District.  She had previously taught in Muse and Millvale, PA.  Many years later, a student wrote her a letter saying she herself had become a teacher because she was so inspired by Mrs. Simms.   The Simms family lived in the Shalercrest area of Pittsburgh for 50 years before moving to Ellwood City.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara (James) Deal of Ellwood City; brother in law, Charles Toth of Goshen, IN; three grandchildren, Kristen (Jeff) Davis, Kimberly Trimpey, Richard  Deal; and six great-grandchildren, Sarah and Kevin Davis, Noah and Micah Trimpey, Emily and Veronika Deal.

The last of her family, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Toth, and three brothers, Wilson, Philip and Hiram Tucker.

Friends will be received on Saturday, May 18 at the Calvin Presbyterian Church from 10 am until the time of the memorial service at 11 am. Sean Brubaker will officiate.
