Sigmond (Sig) Edelman

Sigmond (Sig) Edelman, beloved father of Heather Edelman (Sam Sokol) of Newton, MA, and Marsha Edelman Onufrak (John) of South Dartmouth, MA, died on January 4, 2012, at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home at the age of 91. Mr. Edelman was a former resident of Providence House in Brighton, MA and Farm Pond in Framingham, MA. Born February 11, 1920 in Evans City, PA, he was the son of Michael and Rosetta Zeman Edelman. He was married for 54 years to Pearl (Peggy) Hausman Edelman who died in 2001. His sister Mildred (Midge) Boardman died in 2006. Mr. Edelman owned and operated Edelman’s Shoe Store in Ellwood City, PA, for more than 30 years and was known throughout the local area for his expertise in fitting children’s shoes. He was an active member of the local Chamber of Commerce, Lion’s Club, PTA, Salvation Army, B’nai B’rith, Tree of Life Synagogue in Ellwood City and in later years the Agudath Achim Synagogue in Beaver Falls. He was also an avid golfer at the Connoquenessing Country Club. In his 80’s, he became somewhat of a Renaissance man, enrolling in classes at the University of Massachusetts, attending classical music performances, leading discussions on a variety of topics at the assisted living residences where he lived and becoming an avid computer user. He maintained his indomitable spirit and wonderful sense of humor to the end. He treasured his family and friends above all. Mr. Edelman was a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and a Veteran of the US Army, serving during World War II. In addition to his daughters, he is survived by two beloved granddaughters, Julie Onufrak Parker (Scott) of Cambridge, MA and Michelle Onufrak of New York City. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, Jan. 9th from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Marshall Funeral Home, 200 Fountain Avenue, Ellwood City, PA. Funeral services will be held at Marshall’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, Jan. 10th at 10:30 am with Rabbi Martin Schorr officiating. Interment will follow in the Agudath Achim Cemetery in Patterson Township. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Fund and Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Boston.
