Velia L. Matthews

Velia L. Matthews, 91, of Ellwood City, formerly of Wampum, died on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at the Avalon Nursing Center following an extended illness.

Born August 15, 1920 in Athens, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Sara Jane Curry Stewart.

She was married for 34 years to William W. Matthews who passed away on January 1, 1981.

Mrs. Matthews was formerly employed by Dr. Lawrence Shiparo for many years. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Chewton where she served on the kitchen committee. She also belonged to their Missionary Society.

Survivors include devoted god daughters – Christine Payne of Wampum, Candus Rose of Las Vegas, Nevada; a step son – William McHenry of Los Angeles, California; a niece – Cecelia Bazley (Theodore) Peters of Silver Springs, Maryland; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, devoted friends and her church family.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday March 9, 2012 from 11:00 am until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 pm at the First Baptist Church in Chewton. Her pastor, Rev. Eric Board will officiate.

Interment will follow in Clinton Cemetery.

Local arrangements have been entrusted to the Marshall Funeral Home – Wampum.
